Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has reportedly been rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital in critical condition, raising fresh concerns about the opposition politician’s health amid his ongoing legal troubles.
Doreen Nyanjura, a former deputy lord mayor of Kampala and opposition political figure, announced the development in a post on X on Monday, October 19, 2026.
“Salongo Erias Lukwago in a critical condition, rushed to Mulago hospital,” Nyanjura wrote, without immediately providing further details about his condition or the circumstances surrounding his hospitalisation.
The announcement comes amid growing concern over Lukwago’s health, which has featured prominently in his ongoing legal battle.
Health concerns amid legal battle
Lukwago, a lawyer and president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), has faced legal proceedings over a charge of misprision of treason linked to allegations involving opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye and others. He has denied the charge.
His legal team, led by Kampala lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona, has previously raised concerns about his medical condition and the need for specialised treatment.
The defence has cited health complications and sought medical attention for Lukwago, including further specialist assessment following earlier treatment for cervical spine problems.
Fresh uncertainty over his condition
Lukwago’s reported admission to Mulago Hospital adds to concerns surrounding his wellbeing as his lawyers continue to navigate the court proceedings.
In the latest update, Nyanjura did not disclose the specific medical emergency that led to the reported hospital transfer, the department where Lukwago is receiving treatment, or whether doctors had issued an official statement.
As of the time of publication, further details about his condition had not been independently confirmed.
The development is likely to draw renewed attention to calls by his lawyers and political allies for his health needs to be addressed while his legal case proceeds.
