Ugandan comedy has been plunged into mourning following the death of popular comedian Kapere Lufotose, whose real name is Yokana Mbuuse.
Kapere reportedly died today, Sunday, November 1, 2026, at a hospital in Buddo, Wakiso District. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with his cause of death yet to be established.
His death marks the end of a career that saw him rise from humble beginnings to become one of Uganda’s recognisable comedy personalities, particularly through his association with the Amarula Family comedy group.
Kapere, who built a reputation around his distinctive appearance, expressive facial gestures and unconventional comedy style, became a familiar face in Uganda’s entertainment industry through stage performances, television comedy skits and appearances in music videos.
His journey into comedy was largely accidental. In a February 2013 interview with Daily Monitor, Kapere narrated how a chance encounter with a taxi driver changed his life.
The driver reportedly encouraged him to pursue comedy after noticing that his unusual appearance attracted public attention. He directed him to comedian Amooti Mbalanguzi, who gave him an opportunity to perform on stage.
That opportunity would become the beginning of his entertainment career.
From humble beginnings to comedy stardom
Before joining the entertainment industry, Kapere lived a difficult life. According to his 2013 Daily Monitor interview, he had struggled with a hernia condition during childhood, which affected his education and social life.
He subsequently worked at construction sites to earn a living before receiving medical assistance through the Mukisa Foundation in Lungujja.
After recovering, he learned to make key holders, which provided him with an income. He also worked as a gatekeeper at the foundation.
His breakthrough came after meeting Amooti, who introduced him to comedy.
Kapere’s first performance was a skit titled Lufotoose, inspired by a public disagreement involving a prominent businessman and a Kadongo Kamu musician. The performance was well received and helped establish his stage identity.
He later became part of the Amarula Family, alongside comedians Amooti Mbalanguzi and Messe Bontwe.
