At least six people are feared dead following a road crash involving a Toyota Hiace taxi and a tractor near the Kikuube District local government headquarters in Rujunju Cell, Kikuube Town Council.
The crash occurred at about 8:30pm on Wednesday, according to local residents who witnessed the aftermath of the collision.
The Toyota Hiace, registration number UA 535BL, commonly known as a “Drone” taxi, was reportedly travelling from Kampala to Kabaale in Hoima District, via Kiziranfumbi, when it collided with a tractor that was travelling towards Kiswaaza.
Witnesses said the impact was severe, with preliminary reports indicating that several occupants of the taxi died at the scene.
The tractor driver reportedly failed to stop after the collision and continued towards Kiswaaza, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the crash and the driver’s actions after the incident.
The identities of the deceased had not been established by the time of publication, while the exact number of passengers aboard the taxi and whether there were survivors remained unclear.
Police and other emergency responders are expected to establish the precise circumstances of the crash, including how the collision occurred, the condition of the road and whether excessive speed, poor visibility or other factors contributed to the accident.
The crash adds to concerns over road safety on routes connecting Kampala with the oil-producing Albertine region, where passenger taxis and heavy vehicles regularly share busy highways.
Authorities are expected to trace the tractor and its driver as investigations continue.
Further details, including an official death toll and the identities of the victims, are expected from police.
