Microsoft’s upcoming $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub has cleared another major hurdle: the EU has approved the deal after determining that there are no antitrust concerns in Microsoft buying the popular open-source software repository, via the Financial Times.
European antitrust authorities have reportedly determined that “the merged entity would continue to face significant ongoing competition from other players.”
Officials also aren’t concerned that Microsoft could “undermine the open nature of GitHub,” noting that developers have other options they could switch to if Microsoft’s stewardship of the platform isn’t to their liking.
The GitHub purchase was first announced in June this year, with CEO Satya Nadella commenting at the time,
“We are committed to being stewards of the GitHub community, which will retain its developer-first ethos, operate independently and remain an open platform.
We will always listen to developer feedback and invest in both fundamentals and new capabilities.”
