Ugandan farmers are increasingly turning to digital platforms to access knowledge, improve productivity, and transform agriculture into a profitable enterprise, and at the centre of this shift is the E-Agriculture Academy, the flagship digital learning platform under the ICT4Farmers initiative.

The E-Agriculture Academy, implemented by the Uganda National Farmers Federation (UNFFE) in partnership with Eight Tech Consults and supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), is more than an online learning tool. It is a comprehensive knowledge management system designed to equip farmers with the practical, modern skills they need to farm smarter, access services, and grow their incomes.

A Knowledge Hub for Every Farming Enterprise

At its core, the academy is a structured knowledge repository covering a wide range of farming enterprises. Whether a farmer is engaged in crop production, animal husbandry, fisheries, agribusiness, or post-harvest value addition, the platform offers relevant, expert-verified content tailored to real farming challenges.

Currently, the academy hosts 35 structured courses, with 1,023 farmers actively using the app to access training and information. The courses are self-paced and interactive, accessible via smartphone or computer, meaning farmers can learn anytime and anywhere, without waiting for an extension officer to visit.

Topics covered include:

  • Farm planning and enterprise management
  • Pest and disease control
  • Post-harvest handling and value addition
  • Climate-smart agriculture
  • Digital marketing and market access

By making this knowledge available on demand, the academy bridges the long-standing gap between agricultural research and on-farm practice.

Digital Skilling: Building Farmers’ Capacity from the Ground Up

A key pillar of the E-Agriculture Academy is digital literacy, equipping farmers not just with farming knowledge, but with the foundational digital skills needed to operate in a modern, technology-driven economy.

This includes training farmers on how to use smartphones and digital devices effectively, navigate online platforms, enrol in courses, and apply digital tools to manage their farms. The skilling goes further to cover financial literacy, helping farmers understand digital financial services, manage farm income, open and operate mobile money accounts, and make smarter financial decisions.

Farmers are also introduced to SMART agriculture principles, learning how to use data and technology to plan better, reduce losses, and increase yields.

Access to E-Government Services

Beyond farming knowledge and digital skills, the academy connects farmers to e-government services, a particularly significant benefit for rural communities who have historically had limited access to public services.

Through the platform, farmers learn how to navigate and utilise government digital services relevant to their needs, reducing the barriers that distance and limited literacy have long created. This positions the academy not just as an agricultural tool, but as a broader gateway to civic and economic participation.

Call Centre Offers Real-Time Support

Complementing the academy is a toll-free call centre (0800209003) that provides farmers with immediate access to agricultural advice during normal working hours.

Through the call centre, farmers can ask questions about crops, livestock, fisheries, and forestry; get guidance on pest and disease management; and receive market and production advice from trained agents.

The service supports multiple local languages; English, Luganda, Runyakitara, Swahili, and Luo, with additional languages, including Lugisu, expected to be added as the initiative expands, ensuring greater inclusivity and reach across the country.

Driving Agricultural Transformation

The integration of digital learning, real-time advisory services, financial literacy, and e-government access is helping position farmers at the centre of Uganda’s agricultural transformation.

Under the broader ICT4Farmers initiative, more than 100,000 farmers have already been trained in digital skills, connecting them to markets, services, and improved farm management systems. Officials say the initiative is playing a critical role in building a smarter, more resilient agricultural sector, one where farmers have the knowledge, tools, and support systems to thrive. As digital adoption continues to grow, the E-Agriculture Academy is proving that the future of Ugandan agriculture lies not just in better seeds or inputs, but in better-informed, better-equipped, and digitally empowered farmers.
