On October 19, 2009, Uganda’s political and cultural history recorded a major milestone when President Yoweri Museveni officially recognised the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu, the kingdom of the Bakonzo people in the Rwenzori region.

Museveni attended the 43rd coronation anniversary celebrations of King Charles Wesley Mumbere, popularly known by his royal title, Irema-Ngoma, at Kilembe Mines Golf Club in Kasese District.

The recognition marked a significant moment for the Rwenzururu cultural institution, which had for decades been at the centre of demands for cultural identity and recognition among communities in the Rwenzori region.

King Mumbere, who had returned to Uganda after years in exile, became a central figure in the movement seeking recognition of the kingdom and the cultural aspirations of the Bakonzo people.

The development was widely regarded as a turning point in relations between the government and the Rwenzururu cultural institution, bringing formal recognition to a kingdom whose history is closely tied to the political and cultural struggles of the Rwenzori region.

The Rwenzururu movement emerged in the 1960s, driven by demands for greater autonomy from the Toro Kingdom. Over the years, it evolved into a broader campaign for cultural recognition and self-identity among the Bakonzo and other communities associated with the kingdom.

Museveni’s recognition of the institution in 2009 therefore represented an important chapter in Uganda’s history of cultural institutions and their relationship with the state.

Today, the event remains a landmark in the history of the Rwenzururu Kingdom and the cultural identity of the people of the Rwenzori region.
