The Tooro Royal Succession Committee has strongly defended its decision to select Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, insisting that the decision was reached in accordance with the kingdom’s traditional customs and established succession procedures.
In a statement issued by the Babiito Royal Clan, the committee sought to clarify growing questions and public debate surrounding the succession, including why other members of the late King Oyo’s family had not been considered.
The committee said the succession process was not based on information circulating in the media or public claims, but on recognised cultural procedures, traditional customs and the established arrangements of the Babiito Royal Clan.
The clarification comes amid intense public interest in who will succeed King Oyo, whose death has triggered a closely watched transition within the Tooro Kingdom.
Committee explains why Kijanangoma was selected
The committee said that after consultations within the Babiito Royal Clan, Prince George Kamurasi Desmond, who had initially been preferred, reportedly declined to take up the throne.
It was after George’s decision, according to the committee, that the Babiito Royal Clan selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the successor.
“Following the succession consultations, and after the initial preferred candidate, Prince George Desmond Kamurasi, reportedly declined the throne, the Babiito Royal Clan selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the successor,” the statement reads.
The committee’s explanation is significant because it directly addresses questions over how Kijanangoma emerged as the preferred successor at a time when different names and claims have been circulating publicly.
Rather than presenting the decision as an arbitrary choice, the committee said its responsibility was to ensure that the succession process remained within the framework of Tooro’s traditional institutions.
‘We followed the recognised process’
The committee emphasised that succession to the Tooro throne is governed by traditional customs and cultural procedures.
It said a royal child who is to be considered for the throne is traditionally expected to be introduced to the elders and undergo the required cultural ceremonies and recognition.
Such a child, the committee added, is also expected to receive the appropriate upbringing, guidance and preparation for the responsibilities associated with leadership of the kingdom.
The committee therefore rejected any suggestion that its decision to select Kijanangoma was intended to disrespect, reject or deny any child of the late King Oyo.
It said it was simply required to work within the recognised traditional and succession procedures available to it at the time the decision was made.
Committee dismisses media reports as basis for succession
The succession body also appeared to take aim at the growing role of public and media speculation in the debate over King Oyo’s successor.
It acknowledged that various claims had been made regarding a possible son and other children of the late monarch.
However, the committee said such claims must undergo proper traditional verification before they can be considered in a succession process.
“Such matters require proper verification and cannot responsibly be determined solely through media reports or public claims,” the committee said.
The position provides the committee’s clearest explanation yet for why individuals whose links to the late King Oyo have been publicly discussed were not automatically incorporated into the succession process.
According to the committee, biological claims alone do not settle the traditional question of eligibility to the Tooro throne.
Decision was not meant to reject Oyo’s children
The committee was particularly careful to distance its decision from any suggestion that it had rejected children allegedly fathered by King Oyo.
It said its decision “was not intended to disrespect, reject or deny any child of the late King Oyo.”
Instead, it said, the succession process had to be conducted according to the cultural institutions and procedures of the kingdom.
The clarification could prove crucial as the kingdom attempts to manage a potentially divisive succession debate following the death of a monarch who ascended the throne as a child and became one of Uganda’s most recognisable cultural leaders.
Call for unity
The committee also appealed to Batooro and other concerned Ugandans to avoid speculation and remain united during the transition.
It said the death of King Oyo was a major loss to Tooro and warned that the succession process should not become a source of division.
The committee called upon the public to respect the cultural institutions of Tooro and the Babiito Royal Clan and allow the appropriate traditional authorities to address any outstanding succession questions.
The statement therefore amounts to a firm defence of Kijanangoma’s selection, with the succession committee arguing that the decision was not driven by political considerations or media narratives but by the procedures and traditions governing the Babiito Royal Clan.
For now, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma stands as the successor selected by the Babiito Royal Clan, following the reported withdrawal of Prince George Kamurasi Desmond, as Tooro moves toward the next stage of the transition after King Oyo’s death.
