One of East Africa’s most talked-about celebrity relationships has come to an end.
Ugandan socialite, entrepreneur and reality television star Zari Hassan has announced the end of her marriage to husband Shakib Cham Lutaaya after five years together, bringing to a close a relationship that frequently made headlines across the region.
The announcement came through a statement shared on Zari’s Instagram Story on Friday, where the couple revealed that they had decided to part ways following what they described as “much thought and reflection.”
In the statement, signed jointly by “Zarinah & Shakib,” the couple said they had reached the difficult decision because of “irreconcilable differences.”
“After much thought and reflection, we believe it is best for us to part ways due to irreconcilable differences,” the statement read.
The two acknowledged that ending their relationship had not been easy but insisted it was the right decision for both parties.
“While this wasn’t an easy decision, we feel it is the right one for both of us. We appreciate the time we shared, the memories we created, and the support we gave each other,” the statement continued.
Unlike many celebrity breakups that descend into public accusations and social media battles, the couple stressed that there was no bitterness between them.
“There is no anger or resentment; sometimes two people simply grow in different directions,” they stated, adding that they would continue to value each other and remain friends with “mutual respect and understanding.”
The announcement concluded with the pair wishing each other happiness, success and the very best for the future.
The breakup marks the end of a relationship that attracted significant public attention from the moment the pair went public. Zari and Shakib’s romance became one of the most closely followed celebrity relationships in East Africa, with fans regularly scrutinising their social media posts for clues about the state of their marriage.
Over the years, the couple frequently showcased their affection online, sharing photos and videos from luxury vacations, family gatherings and public appearances. Their relationship was often viewed as a fresh chapter in Zari’s personal life following her highly publicised split from Tanzanian music star Diamond Platnumz.
However, despite their public displays of affection, rumours of tension occasionally surfaced, particularly in recent months. Speculation intensified whenever the pair appeared to spend extended periods apart or when cryptic social media posts emerged, prompting fans to question whether all was well behind the scenes.
Neither Zari nor Shakib has publicly elaborated on the specific issues that led to the separation, choosing instead to keep the details private.
The announcement has already triggered widespread reactions on social media, with fans expressing shock, disappointment and support for both parties. Many praised the mature tone of the statement, noting the absence of public mudslinging that often accompanies celebrity breakups.
For Zari, the separation represents another significant chapter in a life that has unfolded largely in the public eye. Beyond her status as a socialite, she has built a successful business empire spanning real estate, beauty and lifestyle ventures, while also raising her children and maintaining a strong social media presence.
As the dust settles on the breakup announcement, fans will undoubtedly continue to speculate about what lies ahead for both Zari and Shakib. For now, however, the former couple appears united on one point: their decision to move forward separately, while preserving the respect and friendship they say still exists between them.
After five years together, one of East Africa’s most celebrated celebrity unions has officially come to an end—quietly, respectfully, and without the fireworks many had expected.
