Uganda has earned global recognition after one of its diplomats, Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, was named among the winners of the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award by the Islamic University of Madinah.
The award was presented during the institution’s 62nd graduation ceremony held on April 27, 2026, under the patronage of Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Madinah.
Dr. Ssemuddu, Uganda’s Ambassador to Sudan, received the Social Impact Award, one of the top honours granted to alumni who have made significant contributions to society through humanitarian work, community service, and volunteerism.
According to organisers, the Ugandan diplomat was selected from a pool of more than 150,000 alumni worldwide, placing him among a select group of recipients from countries including France, United Kingdom, Philippines, Suriname, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
The recognition highlights Dr. Ssemuddu’s achievements in academic excellence, da’wah work, and his commitment to advancing education and social welfare initiatives both in Uganda and abroad. It also underscores his role in representing Uganda on the global stage through diplomacy and humanitarian advocacy.
Other award categories at the ceremony included Professional Achievement and Sustainable Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Scientific Impact, and Intellectual Awareness.
Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the accolade as a proud moment for Uganda, noting that it reflects the country’s growing influence in global scholarship, leadership, and service.
The honour is expected to boost Uganda’s international profile, showcasing the country’s contributions to diplomacy, education, and community development.
