The technology company also received the Sustainability Reporting Award,  having demonstrated an enduring commitment to laying the groundwork for more robust and impactful sustainability communications in future disclosures, the Financial Reporting Award 2025 under the Consumer and Industry Products category, and a Certificate of Recognition for achievement under the Listed Entity Category.

The FiRe Awards, now in their 15th year, are organized by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) in partnership with the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE).

This year’s theme, “Sustainability Practices and Reporting in Uncertain Global Times,” emphasized the growing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in corporate reporting.

Speaking after receiving the awards on behalf of MTN Uganda, Amanda Bbosa Rabwoni, Senior Manager for Investor Relations, said the recognition reflected MTN’s ongoing commitment to responsible business practices and open communication with its stakeholders.

“These awards affirm MTN Uganda’s commitment to excellence in financial and sustainability reporting,” She said.

“As a listed entity, we take pride in ensuring that our stakeholders, from investors to customers, have access to clear and meaningful information about how we create value. This recognition is a testament to our purpose of driving shared prosperity and sustainable growth.”

Executives from Uganda’s financial sector praised the winners for their efforts in promoting integrity and accountability.

Kizito Denis, Director of Market Supervision at the CMA, said sustainability is now an investment imperative, adding that aligning Uganda’s capital markets with global standards is vital for building investor confidence and supporting long-term socio-economic transformation.

Paul Bwiso, CEO of the Uganda Securities Exchange, commended the FiRe Awards for inspiring better corporate reporting.

“The FiRe Awards have evolved into a platform that promotes governance and responsible leadership in Uganda’s capital markets,” he said.

For MTN Uganda, this recognition builds on a consistent record of excellence. The company’s first Sustainability Report, launched in 2024, marked a milestone in its evolution from a telecommunications provider to a driver of sustainable national development.

The report detailed major achievements, including a 58.4 percent reduction in carbon emissions through renewable energy deployment at more than 500 sites, a 72 percent local supplier retention rate and investments worth Shs 4.6 billion in education and digital inclusion through the MTN Foundation.

It also highlighted progress in expanding digital and financial inclusion, with 4G coverage rising to 87.9 percent, 5G coverage growing from 0.3 percent to 15.3 percent, and fibre infrastructure extending to more than 17,000 kilometres.

MTN Uganda’s CEO, Sylvia Mulinge, has described sustainability as central to the company’s vision.

“True success is measured not only in financial performance but in the lives we touch, the environment we protect and the opportunities we create,” she said during the report’s launch.

The FiRe Awards were created to promote accountability and transparency across Uganda’s business landscape.

Over the years, MTN has consistently been recognized for excellence in reporting, winning three awards in 2024 and multiple accolades in the previous years.

“This year’s Gold Award motivates us to continue raising the bar,” Rabwoni added. “As MTN Uganda advances toward its 2030 vision of integrated sustainability excellence, we remain committed to doing business the right way for our customers, our investors and Uganda’s future.”
