South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed his country’s relations with Uganda, saying strengthened ties will bring prosperity to their peoples.
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni is in South Africa on a 3-day visit.
“As testament to our growing relations, we have just witnessed the signing of Memoranda of Understanding in diverse areas of cooperation,” Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa also congratulated President Museveni who is set to host the Non-aligned Movement later this year.
“I congratulated President Museveni on Uganda’s nomination as the incoming Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement,” President Ramaphosa said in a tweet.
In 2019, Uganda was endorsed to chair the Non-Aligned Movement on behalf of Africa for the period from 2022 to 2025.
Ramaphosa added, “We believe that Uganda’s chairing will be an ideal opportunity to revitalise the Non-Aligned Movement so that it pursues the interests of developing economy countries.”
Formed in 1961, the chair position rotates every three years during summit conferences. The chair of the movement is assisted by both the former and incoming chairs. According to the movement, this structure represents its past, present and future.
The two presidents agreed to champion deliberate efforts to reinvigorate and boost trade between “our two countries as well as put in place avenues to facilitate increase in investment.”
On Wednesday, President Yoweri Museveni paid homage to all the heroes and the martyrs of the anti-colonial struggle- the struggle with a visit to the monument at the Freedom Park.
