If you thought Rotary clubs were just about breakfast meetings and blazer badges, the 101st District Conference, #DISCON101 that kicks off today at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe is about to change your mind. And if that is not enough to get your attention, perhaps the fact that American actress Mary-Louise Parker jetted into the country last night will do the trick.
Yes. That Mary-Louise Parker. The Emmy-winning star best known to many Ugandans through their Netflix accounts. She is here. In Entebbe. For a Rotary conference. Uganda never stops surprising.

Parker is among the headline speakers at the three-day gathering, which runs from April 16 to 18 and is expected to draw over 3,000 delegates from across Uganda, the region, and the wider Rotary international network. The conference runs under the theme Inspire • Serve • Impact which, given the calibre of people assembled, appears to be more than just a tagline.
A Speaker Lineup That Means Business
The #DISCON101 organising team has not played it small. Alongside Parker, the conference features a roster that reads like a who’s who of East African achievement. Robert Burale, the Kenyan motivational speaker and life coach who has built a continental following, is on the bill. So is Ntare Guma Mbayo Mwine, the Ugandan-American actor and activist who has carved a serious name for himself in American film and television.
Rounding out the lineup are Ian Henry Stuart Riseley, a former Rotary International president, bringing institutional gravitas to the room; Steve Killelia; Raju Subramanian; Uganda’s own Francis Tusubira; and David Alexander. To say there is something for everyone in this lineup would be an understatement.
Over sh1 Billion on the Table
For those who like their inspiration served with financial figures, here is a number worth noting. Rotary Districts 9213 and 9214 have jointly mobilised over shs1 billion in cash and in-kind support to finance not just this conference, but two other major Rotary events also scheduled for Uganda this year, including the 7th All Africa Zone Institute, set for September.
Centenary Bank alone is contributing sh280 million across the three events, with shs100 million allocated to the District 9213 conference. Other partners include Stanbic Bank, Prudential, Vaal Real Estate, Fotogenix, NBS Television, and AfroMobile, among a long list of sponsors who appear to have caught the Rotary fever.
District 9213 governor Geoffrey Martin Kitakule has said Rotary in Uganda has already implemented projects worth over shs8 billion this Rotary year, covering health, education, youth empowerment, and economic development. Today’s conference is, in part, a moment to celebrate those gains before setting the agenda for what comes next.
Why This Matters
It is easy to scroll past a Rotary conference notice. But what is happening in Entebbe this week is, in many ways, a statement about Uganda’s capacity to host high-level international gatherings, about the growing ambition of civil society and service organisations in the country, and about the kind of cross-sector networks that quietly shape communities in ways that rarely make the front page.
Over 3,000 delegates. A Hollywood actress on the podium. A billion shillings in backing. And three days of conversations about service, impact, and what it means to lead.
#DISCON101 is, by any measure, worth watching.
The conference runs through Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Entebbe.
