Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has asked concerned government officials to push for speedy trial of Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana and the Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.
She expressed displeasure that the two MPs have spent a year under incarceration, which has debarred their respective constituencies representation.
“As the head of the institution, all Members of Parliament here belong to the Speaker. My two members of Parliament make one year in Prison today,” Among said.
She requested the government to hasten trial of these members so that they go back and represent their constituencies.
In the same vain, Leader of opposition Mathia Mpuuga conveyed his dissatisfaction with the Judiciary over to prosecute the MPs who were arrested in September 2021 over alleged killings greater Masaka.
Mpuuga warned that there is a syndicate plotting to keep MPs Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya in detention for an extended period of time.
He called upon the house to intervene and ensure the legislators are freed.
“These two members will necessitate Parliament’s special intervention. In my opinion, there is a conspiracy to keep them detained. The State has been unable to prosecute their case for a full year, and the judge has been changed; it is disheartening,” Mpuuga said during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Anita Among on Wednesday, September 7, 2022.
The LoP also slammed the judiciary, accusing it of denying two constituencies representation in Parliament for a year.
