President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly suspended campaigns for the Speaker of Parliament position within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. (Cartoon by Ogon).

On Monday, Museveni who is also the NRM Chairman, summoned Speaker Rebecca Kadaga and her Deputy, Jacob Oulanyah (both contenders for the job), to State House Entebbe for a meeting over the issue.

The meeting came days after Kadaga had officially launched her bid to retain the seat she has now held for ten years.

According to sources, Museveni called off the campaigns because of a worry they could create factions within the party.

Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party spokesperson and Kira Municipality MP, is the other candidate in the race.

Elections for the speaker are set to be held in May.
