The Uganda Land Commission has asked for an additional Shs100billion to be able to aid its mandate of protecting government land.
Commission chairperson, Beatrice Byenkya points out that the money allocated to them is insufficient to hire staff to carry out the duties of the commission.
“The money that is being disseminated to the commission does not match with the responsibilities,” she said.
Byenkya also pointed out that the money allocated to the commission is too insufficient to hire staff to carry out the duties of the commission.
“The personnel that we have are very few on the ground, on the behalf of government we are supposed to monitor and do everything,” she said.
She also accused government officials of being among the predators who grab and steal government land in different parts of the country.
Byenkya said the growing vice of government officials grabbing government land is too high in the country therefore there is need for the immediate action.
She said that it is unfortunate to see public servants actively breaking the law instead of giving protection to government property.
“The cadres of government are not really carrying out their responsibilities to keep whatever it is in their custody. What type leaders are we? because we are supposed to be leaders by example and the common person is supposed to look at us,” she said.
She said the act of stealing government land leaves the country in the worrying state.
She further noted that to streamline the activities in Uganda Land Commission, there shall be inspection of government land across the country to ascertain its fitness of the intended purpose and the agreement in terms of usage.
“Failure to inspect the land, we have found that the commission sometimes gives out the wetlands, so inspection is key as far as the Uganda Land Commission is concerned, you get the application, you read through before you say yes or no, you should inspect,” she said.
