Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has officially graduated from the world-renowned Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in the United Kingdom, joining the ranks of some of the world’s most distinguished military leaders after completing one of the most demanding officer commissioning courses.

Ruhamya graduated on Wednesday alongside fellow Ugandan Officer Cadet Bakira Ruyondo during the prestigious Sovereign’s Parade, marking the successful completion of the academy’s rigorous commissioning programme that prepares future military leaders for command responsibilities.

Their graduation represents another milestone in Uganda’s long-standing military relationship with the British military academy, which has produced generations of UPDF commanders and military leaders from more than 129 countries since opening its doors to international cadets after the Second World War.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, whose motto is “Serve to Lead,” is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier officer training institutions. Founded more than two centuries ago, the academy trains all British Army officers and selected international cadets through an intensive programme focused on leadership, military ethics, battlefield tactics, physical endurance, strategic thinking and command under pressure.

Unlike conventional military training, Sandhurst places significant emphasis on developing officers capable of making critical decisions in complex operational environments while inspiring confidence among the soldiers they command.

Officer cadets undergo months of demanding academic instruction, leadership exercises, field operations, weapons handling, survival training and physical conditioning before earning their commissions.

Gen Muhoozi’s Pride

Ruhamya’s graduation comes months after Gen Muhoozi publicly revealed that his son had enrolled at the elite academy.

Throughout the training period, the CDF frequently shared photographs and updates on social media documenting his son’s progress, offering Ugandans a rare glimpse into the demanding lifestyle of a Sandhurst cadet.

One of his most notable posts featured a side-by-side photograph comparing Ruhamya’s training experience with his own graduation from the academy nearly three decades ago.

The comparison underscored a remarkable family tradition spanning generations.

Gen Muhoozi himself joined the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) as an Officer Cadet in 1999 before graduating from Sandhurst in 2000, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

His military career has since seen him rise through virtually every major command appointment within the UPDF, including Commander of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC), Commander of Land Forces and ultimately Chief of Defence Forces.

Military analysts have often cited Sandhurst as one of the formative institutions that shaped his professional military career.

Continuing a Military Legacy

Ruhamya’s graduation also extends the Museveni family’s long association with Uganda’s armed forces.

President Yoweri Museveni served as the commander of the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the five-year liberation struggle that culminated in the movement taking power in January 1986.

Since then, the UPDF has evolved into a professional national army, with successive generations of officers receiving advanced military education both locally and abroad.

With his graduation, Ruhamya now joins a new generation of UPDF officers expected to contribute to the leadership and modernization of Uganda’s military.

Officer Cadet Bakira Ruyondo’s graduation equally adds another internationally trained officer to the UPDF’s growing corps of professional commanders.

Among the World’s Finest Military Academies

Sandhurst enjoys a reputation that extends far beyond the United Kingdom.

For more than 200 years, the academy has produced military commanders, heads of state, members of royal families and national leaders from across the globe.

Its alumni include Britain’s King Charles III, Prince William and Prince Harry, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, as well as numerous presidents, monarchs, generals and defence chiefs from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

According to the British Army, more than 5,400 international cadets from 129 countries have trained at Sandhurst since 1947, making it one of the most internationally respected military academies in the world.

The academy continues to attract officer cadets from countries including Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, Botswana, Nigeria and many Commonwealth nations, reflecting its enduring reputation for producing disciplined, ethical and effective military leaders.

Its graduates are expected not only to master military operations but also to embody values of integrity, courage, selfless service and professional leadership—qualities that have made Sandhurst synonymous with elite officer training worldwide.

For Uganda, the graduation of Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba and Officer Cadet Bakira Ruyondo reinforces the country’s continued investment in developing highly trained military leaders through internationally recognised institutions, adding two more Sandhurst-trained officers to the ranks of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
