The Police has revealed that phase two of CCTV cameras will be installed along highways, all municipalities and all other major towns including boarders of Katuna, Malaba, Busia among others.
While addressing the media at the police headquarters in Naguru on Monday, the force’s spokesperson Fred Enanga said this second phase of the exercise is expected to commence as soon as possible.
He noted that the force will work with National Information Technology NITA Uganda to carry out the activity.
He said the force has identified crime prone areas across different parts of the country.
“So far we have strategically identified 2319 sites where surveillance cameras are supposed to be installed, we shall be installing automatic number plate recognition cameras and then 20 facial recognition cameras and out of these we have 107 Stations,”
He noted that the phase one of these CCTV cameras has greatly helped in the fighting crimes in the urban areas.
“We believe this is going to be very helpful, already in Kampala metropolitan where the phase one was installed, we can already see that there is much improvement in crime and safety,” he said
He said the additional cameras countrywide will also act as a deterrent to criminals and help to improve the quality of lives within the communities.
“Kisoro, Mityana, Mubende, Kamuli and Rukungiri, so these crucial areas that don’t have back bond infrastructure from NITA Uganda, we are going to use stand-alone networks in those areas so that CCTV cameras can transmit to the command centre based on the stand alone network until when it gets coverage from NITA Uganda,” he said.
He also noted that the force will set CCTV monitoring centres at 107 police stations across the country.
“What is remaining is the digging and the erection. The public and the other stakeholders have seen how CCTV cameras have been helpful in deterring crimes within the city and along the highways, “he said.
