Uganda for the roses, Ride, Run and Cycling campaign has been launched on Saturday in Jinja, with a charity run.
The activity, which is to be carried out annually, is aimed at fighting breast and cervical cancer in women.
Sylivia Nakamya, the Executive Director of Rays of Hope Hospice in Jinja noted that the run is intended to raise funds to help screen women on cervical and breast cancer.
She called upon all the women in the country to embrace early medical check-ups so that the disease is detected early enough in a bid to fight it before it spreads to all parts of the body.
“We urge all women to go for early check-ups because it is very vital for you to go for cancer screening and know how your body is standing,” she said.
She noted that regular cervical screening is the way to identify abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix at an early age hence providing immediate solutions to fight it before the situation worsens.
She called upon the public and sponsors to give all the necessary assistance to the patients with cancer including clothes as one way of making them feel comfortable in the society.
She however revealed that some things which are said to be free by Uganda Cancer institute are and cited example of radiotherapy.
“The Uganda cancer institute, there are some things they say are free but surely they are not free even the radiotherapy is not free,” she said.
She said there is need to get support to treat and care for the ladies who have breast and cervical cancer noting that there are many women with cancer that need financial support.
“And we have to raise resources to be able to screen the ladies so that we can get those who have cervical cancer early enough for easy treatment,” she noted.
