President Museveni arrives in Arusha for 20th EAC Summit

President Yoweri Museveni has arrived in Tanzania’s second biggest capital Arusha on a one-day official working visit where he is due to address the 20th Ordinary East African Community (EAC) Summit of heads of state.

The President is the current chairman of the EAC.

The President was welcomed at the Kilimanjaro International Airport by the Hon. Palamagamba Kabudi, the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs of the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda’s Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs Hon.

Ali Kirunda Kivejinja and the Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana.

Others to receive him included Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Richard Kabonero, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Patrick Mugoya, the Permanent Secretary EAC Affairs, Edith Mwanje, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Rwanda, Olive Wonekha and Uganda’s Ambassador to South Sudan, Brigadier Ronnie Barya.

The President later inspected a silent Guard of Honour mounted by the United Republic of Tanzania Armed Forces and acknowledged entertainment from cultural dancers.

This year’s meeting is a follow up of the 19th Ordinary Summit that was held at Munyonyo in Kampala. The 38th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers preceded it.

In Arusha for the meeting is host President Dr. John Pombe Magufuli and Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Burundi and Rwanda are represented by their respective Ministers.

Among the items on the provisional agenda are; the status of the resolution of the long outstanding non-tariff barriers and the progress report on the adoption of the Political Confederation as a transitional model of the East African Political Federation, among other things.
