Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has said communication in homes is crucial in the advancement of the women’s cause.

Kadaga said disagreements, stalling of progress and conflicts in homes could be forestalled through effective communication that engenders understanding in the family.

“Communication in the home is very important; it is very central and is where you can start from to negotiate and move together as a family,” she said.

Kadaga was the moderator of a session titled “Peace begins in the home: Women-led initiatives for peace and development”, on the side-lines of the ongoing Global Peace  Leadership Conference (GPLC) at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.

Kadaga led a high level panel that consisted of Dr Soonok Kang, the Secretary General of Global Peace Women, Rev Canon Rosemary Mbogo, the Provincial Secretary in the Anglican Church of Kenya and Ms Hajiya Amina, a youth activist in Nigeria.

The other is Dr Junsook Moon, Chairperson Global Peace Women International.

Kadaga criticised the African Union for what she said is its unforthcoming attitude in relaying conversations and discussions pertinent to the women cause.

“Unfortunately, it [African Union] is a bit disconnected from us; we don’t even know what happens there. Sometimes we ask the Ministers but they don’t even come,” said Kadaga, who added that the panel will have to take drastic measures in order to be included on the crucial Common Markets conversation.

Ramalla Isaac, a delegate from Kenya, said women should value their wealth not in terms of money but ideas.

“It is not the absence of money that makes someone poor, it is the absence of ideas,” said Ramalla, who cautioned women against criticising marriage.

She said child marriage should be distinguished from early marriage, saying it is important that young women start families early.

Ms Collette Caprara, who co-chaired the session, said the role of single women in raising families should not be forgotten.

Carrara, an Editor Emeritus at the DeVos Centre for Religion and Civil Society at the Heritage Foundation in the United States, said women should juggle career and family for success.

The summit continues Thursday, with President Yoweri Museveni expected to be joined by regional leaders for the summit’s peak.
