A new lead has emerged in the murder of Afrigo Band legend Moses Matovu after witnesses reportedly said that the veteran musician had dropped off a young woman at a house in Kibuli shortly before he was attacked.
Matovu, 77, was killed on Thursday morning at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, according to Police, which has opened a case of suspected murder. He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital after sustaining serious injuries but later succumbed.
Police said a task team had been deployed to the scene to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
But fresh accounts from the scene are now pointing investigators towards a woman who was reportedly with Matovu shortly before his death.
According to an eyewitness account from the scene, Matovu allegedly dropped off a young woman at a house in the Kibuli area before entering the premises with her.
The woman, whose identity has not been established, was subsequently seen being taken away by CID officers as investigations into the musician’s death intensified.
The eyewitness described her as a young, brown-skinned woman but did not provide further details about her identity or her relationship with Matovu.
New twist in murder investigation
The development introduces a new line of inquiry into what happened to Matovu in the final moments of his life.
However, there is currently no official confirmation from Police that the woman is a suspect, that she was involved in the killing, or that the murder was motivated by a romantic dispute.
It would therefore be premature to describe the case as a crime of passion until investigators establish what happened inside and around the house.
Police have so far only confirmed that Matovu was attacked by unknown assailants and later died from his injuries. The motive remains undisclosed.
Matovu’s final hours
The new account comes as investigators piece together Matovu’s movements before the fatal assault.
Matovu had performed at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Wednesday evening, just hours before his death. He had appeared at a farewell event for the outgoing Executive Director of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda before leaving the venue.
Other reports have indicated that Matovu was attacked during the early hours of Thursday, with conflicting preliminary accounts about his movements immediately before the assault.
Uganda Radio Network and Daily Monitor previously reported that preliminary information suggested he was attacked while heading towards a mosque for morning prayers.
A separate account attributed to Matovu’s son said the musician had been returning home from work when he was assaulted.
The conflicting early accounts underscore why investigators are now working to establish a precise timeline of the veteran musician’s final hours.
Police hunt for killers
Kabalagala Police have registered a suspected murder case involving Matovu and say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the attackers.
The Uganda Police Force said its task team was at the scene conducting investigations and would provide further information as the probe progresses.
The discovery that Matovu may have spent time with an unidentified woman shortly before his death could become a significant part of the investigation if detectives establish a connection between the encounter and the subsequent attack.
For now, however, the woman’s identity, her relationship with Matovu and what happened at the house remain unknown.
As detectives examine the scene and interview witnesses, the central questions remain: Who attacked Moses Matovu, why was he attacked, and what happened between his arrival at the house and the fatal assault?
The answers could determine whether the woman seen with the music legend was merely a witness to his final movements or holds information critical to solving his killing.
