The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is increasingly becoming more than an annual athletics competition.

The event has emerged as one of Uganda’s most important sports tourism platforms, bringing thousands of runners, spectators and visitors to Kasese while showcasing the Rwenzori Mountains and the wider western Uganda tourism circuit.

The fifth edition, held on August 22, 2026, provided the strongest demonstration yet of the marathon’s potential.

The Ministry of Tourism described the event as positioning Kasese as Uganda’s international sports tourism region, highlighting the combination of elite athletics, international recognition and tourism promotion.

The transformation has been gradual.

The marathon was launched in 2022 with a vision of using running to draw attention to Kasese and its tourism potential.

Four editions later, the event had become Uganda’s first World Athletics Label Road Race.

That achievement gave Kasese a place on the international road-running calendar.

The tourism opportunity lies partly in the route.

The full marathon begins at the Equator in Kikorongo inside Queen Elizabeth National Park before heading towards Kasese and the Rwenzori foothills.

The course combines savannah landscapes, the national park environment, Kasese town and the dramatic mountain backdrop.

The half marathon provides another scenic experience by taking runners from Kasese towards the Rwenzori foothills.

This creates a tourism product that is difficult to replicate.

Visitors do not simply arrive at a stadium or city centre to watch a race.

They experience an entire landscape.

The Equator provides one attraction.

Queen Elizabeth National Park provides another.

The Rwenzori Mountains provide the visual signature.

Kasese itself becomes the centre of the event.

For the tourism industry, that combination creates opportunities before and after race day.

Visitors can extend their stay and explore the region instead of returning home immediately after completing their races.

That has implications for local businesses.

Hotels can benefit from increased occupancy.

Restaurants receive additional customers.

Transport operators have more passengers.

Tour guides can organise excursions.

Tourism attractions receive more visitors.

Small businesses can also benefit from increased demand for food, crafts, entertainment and other services.

This is the multiplier effect that makes sports tourism attractive to destinations.

The Ministry of Tourism has emphasised the importance of using major events to showcase Uganda’s natural attractions and encourage visitors to explore beyond the event itself.

The marathon’s organisers have adopted a similar strategy.

The event includes an expo and exhibition space where businesses and partners can engage directly with participants.

The race therefore becomes a marketplace as well as a sporting competition.

Government has also backed the event.

The Ministry of Tourism and other government institutions have supported efforts to position the marathon as an international sports tourism property.

The 2026 edition received substantial government backing, while officials highlighted its potential for talent identification, tourism promotion and enterprise development.

The international status of the race adds another important dimension.

When World Athletics places an event on its international calendar, it becomes easier for the race to attract elite athletes and gain visibility among international running communities.

The results of the 2026 race demonstrated that potential.

Uganda’s Leonard Chemonges won the men’s marathon in 2:13:25, while Kenya’s Margaret Jepchumba won the women’s race in 2:39:15.

Thousands of other runners participated in the various categories.

The event also creates a powerful digital marketing opportunity for Uganda.

Runners photograph themselves against the Rwenzori Mountains.

Spectators share images of the Equator and race route.

International participants post their experiences online.

Media organisations publish stories about the competition.

Every photograph and story potentially becomes free destination marketing for Kasese.

That is particularly valuable in an age when travellers increasingly rely on digital content when choosing destinations.

The Rwenzori Marathon therefore sells an experience rather than simply a race.

It sells the opportunity to run through one of Uganda’s most spectacular landscapes.

It sells adventure.

It sells the Equator.

It sells the Rwenzori Mountains.

And it sells the hospitality of Kasese.

The challenge for the organisers and tourism authorities will be to ensure that the growth remains sustainable.

More visitors mean greater economic opportunities, but they also require adequate infrastructure, waste management, environmental protection, accommodation and transport.

The marathon’s connection to the Rwenzori ecosystem makes conservation particularly important.

Ultimately, the success of the event will not be measured only by finishing times and prize money.

It will also be measured by how many visitors return to Kasese, how many businesses benefit and how effectively the marathon changes perceptions of the region.

If that trajectory continues, the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon could become one of Uganda’s most powerful examples of how sport can drive tourism and local economic development.
