What was once a popular nightlife spot in Kiwatule has been reduced to ashes after a devastating fire gutted La Gatos Lounge and Car Wash, leaving the entertainment venue completely destroyed.
The fire broke out at the lounge located near the Wazalendo SACCO offices in Kiwatule, Kampala.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known by press time.
La Gatos had built a reputation as a vibrant hangout for Kampala’s night-time crowd, offering food, cocktails, live band performances and a relaxed setting for patrons looking to spend time with friends and loved ones.
But the familiar sounds of live music and evening revelry have now been replaced by the aftermath of a major fire, with the once-busy entertainment spot reportedly burnt to ashes.
The extent of the financial losses was not immediately established, although the destruction of the lounge, its furnishings, equipment and other property is expected to represent a significant loss to the proprietors.
The incident also raises fresh questions about fire safety and emergency preparedness at entertainment establishments, where large numbers of people can gather, particularly during peak evening hours.
Authorities are expected to establish what triggered the fire and whether there were any safety lapses that may have contributed to the destruction.
As investigations begin, the owners, workers and patrons of La Gatos are left counting the cost of a fire that has wiped out a familiar part of Kiwatule’s nightlife scene.
For now, the big question remains unanswered: what started the fire that turned one of Kiwatule’s popular hangouts into a pile of ashes?
