President Yoweri Museveni has met the outgoing United States Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, and praised his contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries during his tenure.
The meeting took place on Tuesday at State Lodge Nakasero, where President Museveni and Ambassador Popp held discussions on issues of mutual interest and cooperation between Uganda and the United States.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Museveni expressed appreciation for the ambassador’s service in Uganda over the past years, noting that his tenure had helped deepen the cordial ties between Kampala and Washington.
“I thank Ambassador Popp for his service over the past years and for his contribution to strengthening the cordial relations between Uganda and the United States,” Museveni said.
The President noted that their discussions focused on areas of shared interest and ongoing cooperation between the two nations, which have maintained diplomatic relations for decades across sectors including trade, health, security, education, and development.
The meeting comes as Ambassador Popp concludes his diplomatic assignment in Uganda after serving as the chief representative of the United States government in the country. During his tenure, Uganda and the United States continued collaboration on a number of programmes aimed at supporting economic development, public health initiatives, and regional security efforts.
Museveni wished the outgoing envoy success in his future assignments and endeavours, describing his service as an important contribution to the relationship between the two countries.
“I wish him good luck in his future assignments and endeavours,” the President said.
The departure of Ambassador Popp marks the end of a diplomatic mission that has overseen cooperation between Uganda and the United States during a period of evolving regional and global challenges.
The United States remains one of Uganda’s key development and strategic partners, with ongoing engagements in areas such as healthcare, governance, education, trade promotion, and security cooperation. Officials from both countries have repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations and expanding opportunities for collaboration.
The meeting at State Lodge Nakasero underscored the continued commitment by both Uganda and the United States to sustain dialogue and cooperation even as diplomatic leadership transitions take place.
