Motorists travelling along the busy Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula highway are facing significant disruptions after access to parts of the road was blocked due to ongoing construction works and heavy rains that have damaged a key diversion route.
According to an update from the Ministry of Works and Transport, the temporary diversion on the Masaka–Kyotera section—put in place to facilitate rehabilitation works—has been severely affected by flooding following persistent rainfall.
Initially, drivers had been redirected to use the Kasaali–Kyotera Town route to connect onward to the Mutukula border. However, the diversion has deteriorated rapidly under pressure from heavy truck traffic, leaving it nearly impassable in some sections.
As a result, many motorists have been forced to resort to a much longer alternative route via Biikira, Kifuuta, and Bbanda, stretching close to 20 kilometres to access Kyotera Town and the border.
This comes despite the main access road between Kasaali and Kyotera Town being less than a kilometre under normal conditions.
The disruption has also affected public service delivery, with some civil servants reportedly struggling to access district headquarters due to the compromised road network.
In response, the Ministry said the contractor is undertaking urgent restoration works on the damaged diversion to reinstate it and restore normal traffic flow. Authorities have expressed optimism that the situation will improve by tomorrow morning.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution while navigating the affected areas and to follow instructions issued by on-site traffic personnel.
The Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula road is a critical trade corridor linking Uganda to regional markets through the Mutukula border, making the ongoing disruption a concern for both transporters and cross-border trade operators.
