Defending champions Stanbic Black Pirates delivered a ruthless statement of intent over the weekend, overpowering Rhinos Rugby Club 45–10 in a rain-soaked encounter to climb to the summit of the league standings.
Played under a heavy Saturday downpour, the match tested both sides’ discipline, handling and tactical execution. But the Pirates rose above the slippery conditions, blending structured attacking play with relentless physical intensity to dismantle their opponents.
Umar Duff led the charge with two well-crafted tries, setting the tone for the champions’ dominance. Alex Ariho and the pacey Allan Karuhanga — nicknamed the “Speed Merchant” — stretched the Rhinos’ defence with incisive runs in open play, while captain Isaac Massa marshalled his side with authority, ensuring defensive solidity and swift transitions from turnover ball.
William Nkore proved clinical off the tee, calmly slotting conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking and effectively shut the door on any hopes of a Rhinos comeback.
Head Coach Marvin Ondogo’s tactical decision to deploy the full 23-man squad paid off handsomely. The depth and cohesion of the Byeyogerere-based outfit were evident throughout the contest, as fresh legs maintained intensity despite the demanding weather conditions.
The victory lifts the Pirates a point clear at the top of the table, edging ahead of title rivals Mongers Rugby Club, Buffalos Rugby Club and Heathens Rugby Club, who trail on 12 and 11 points respectively.
Celebrations later spilled into Rugby Chill, where jubilant fans marked the emphatic win in style, buoyed by discounted drinks courtesy of Stanbic Bank’s FlexiPay platform.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Pirates have sent a clear message to the rest of the league: the champions remain the team to beat.
