Opposition leader Bobi Wine has accused security forces of violently arresting and assaulting one of his lawyers during a failed attempt to access his home in Magere.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Monday morning, Bobi Wine, who also leads the National Unity Platform (NUP), said a team of party lawyers and leaders was blocked by police and military personnel from entering his residence, which he claims has been under siege for the past month.
According to the former presidential candidate, security operatives violently arrested lawyer Kakuru Tumusiime and “brutalised him” before detaining him for several hours.
“After several hours, they dumped him at a police station where he was interrogated about my whereabouts before being released on bond,” Bobi Wine wrote.
He added that Tumusiime has since been charged with “common nuisance,” a misdemeanor under Ugandan law.
Bobi Wine further alleged that the continued security deployment at his Magere home stems from a raid conducted about a month ago, after which access to the premises has reportedly been restricted.
The incident, he noted, occurred as Uganda marked Janani Luwum Day, a national commemoration in honor of the late Archbishop who was killed in 1977 during the regime of Idi Amin.
“All this criminality [is] taking place on a day our nation is commemorating Bishop Janani Luwum Day,” Bobi Wine stated, ending his message with the words: “UGANDA WILL BE FREE.”
Police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces had not immediately issued an official statement regarding the allegations by press time.
The developments add to ongoing tensions between the opposition and security agencies, particularly surrounding the movements and activities of the NUP principal.
