President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM flag bearer for the 2026 presidential elections, is set to campaign in Iganga District, and Jinja District/Jinja City today, with the ruling party expected to spotlight major development achievements registered across the Busoga sub-region under NRM leadership.
The visit comes as the NRM intensifies its mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2026 polls, reaffirming its message of stability, infrastructure expansion, economic transformation and social service delivery.
Infrastructure: Roads and Power Supply Boost Economic Activity
Over the years, Busoga’s road network has undergone significant upgrades, easing transportation for traders, farmers and manufacturers.
Key improvements frequently cited by the NRM include:
- Jinja–Iganga Road rehabilitation, strengthening the region’s central trade corridor.
- Upgrades on Nakalama–Tirinyi–Pallisa Road and feeder roads that support agricultural markets.
- Expansion and improved reliability of electricity infrastructure feeding Jinja and Iganga, enabling household access and supporting industrial growth.
Jinja City — historically Uganda’s industrial heart — continues to benefit from improved power stability and strategic investment in energy infrastructure, much of which the NRM attributes to long-term planning and sector reforms.
Agriculture and Wealth Creation Programs
In both Iganga and Jinja, government wealth-creation initiatives such as Operation Wealth Creation, the Parish Development Model (PDM) and NAADS support programs have benefited thousands of farmers.
In Iganga, farmers have received seedlings, livestock and post-harvest support intended to expand household incomes. In Jinja, similar interventions have helped farmers diversify into coffee, fruits, vegetables, dairy and aquaculture — sectors increasingly important for local employment and export potential.
The Busoga sub-region has also seen significant progress in the fight against poverty through the rollout of PDM funds, with many parishes now financing small-scale enterprises for youth, women and vulnerable households.
Education and Skills Development
Jinja and Iganga have witnessed strong investment in the education sector under the NRM government. Upgrades to Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools have improved enrollment, while vocational and technical institutions in the region have expanded capacity to equip young people with employable skills.
Institutions such as Jinja Vocational Institute and others have been supported to align training programs with modern industry demands — including mechanics, welding, tailoring, ICT and agribusiness.
Health Sector Strengthening
NRM leaders also highlight improved access to healthcare across Busoga. Jinja Regional Referral Hospital has undergone continuous upgrades, while health centre IIIs and IVs in Iganga have been equipped with more staff, maternity wards, modern equipment and medicines.
Community health outreach programs have also improved maternal care, vaccination access and disease prevention efforts.
Industrial Growth and Urban Renewal in Jinja City
Jinja City has seen renewed momentum in the industrial sector through government-backed support for the Jinja Industrial Park and the revival of manufacturing investments.
Urban renewal initiatives — including upgrades in road lighting, road repairs, sanitation and tourism infrastructure — have enhanced Jinja’s status as a commercial and leisure hub.
As President Museveni campaigns in Iganga and Jinja today, he is expected to highlight these achievements as part of the NRM’s case for reelection.
Party officials say the focus will be on continuity, stability, household income growth, and ongoing transformation, pillars they argue are essential to securing Busoga’s long-term development.
Large crowds are expected at the rallies as the NRM seeks to solidify its support in the region ahead of the 2026 general elections.
