The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has officially launched the nomination process for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and presidential aspirants, urging its members to actively engage in the electoral roadmap ahead of the 2026 general elections.
According to a statement issued by the party spokesperson, Arach Oyat Sharon, the picking and returning of application forms for SIGs representatives including Youth, Persons with Disabilities, and Older Persons began on May 5 and will close on May 10, 2025.
“The forms are available through the Party District Chairpersons and Regional Vice Chairpersons across the country,” the statement noted.
For positions where more than one aspirant emerges, UPC will hold internal party primaries between May 15 and 17, 2025. The development comes ahead of the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) nomination period for Village SIG Committees, scheduled for June 2 to 10, with polling set for June 16 to 19.
UPC has called upon all party structures to mobilize aggressively at the grassroots level.
“We urge our leaders and members to ensure UPC sweeps SIGs positions at village level while aligning with the IEC roadmap,” the statement read.
Despite commending the IEC for managing the national voters’ register display process, UPC expressed deep concern over delays in delivering the SIGs register to several villages.
“We have received multiple reports that the Register for the Special Interest Groups has not yet reached most of the villages. This is causing despair and interfering with the internal party process of identifying qualified flag bearers,” the party said, urging the IEC to expedite the distribution.
Meanwhile, the UPC also reminded its members interested in contesting for the party presidency that the window for picking and returning the Declaration of Interest form is open from May 5 to May 20, 2025.
As the 2026 elections approach, UPC has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive participation and internal democratic processes, urging all members to engage fully in the ongoing electoral activities.
