The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NGLRB) has intensified its efforts to create a fair and transparent gaming industry by cracking down on illegal gambling operations.

In its latest enforcement action, the Board has targeted unlicensed operators in parts of Western Uganda, with significant results.

Enforcement Operation in Western Uganda

The NGLRB enforcement team, supported by the Uganda Police, conducted an unannounced operation in Western Uganda, leading to the confiscation of over 157 illegal gaming machines.

These machines, which include slot machines and gaming fish tables, were being operated without proper authorization from the Board.

The operation also led to the arrest of Rajab Mukwaya, an unlawful gaming operator in Masaka City. Mukwaya was found in possession of unlicensed gaming fish tables and slot machines.

The Board confirmed that he will face charges in the Makindye Standard and Utilities Court, marking a significant step in their crackdown on illegal operators.

“The enforcement is a crucial pillar in our efforts to establish a fair and transparent gaming industry,” the NGLRB stated. They emphasized the importance of compliance with regulations and urged all operators to obtain proper licensing before engaging in gaming activities.

History of Crackdowns on Illegal Gaming

The recent operation follows a series of successful enforcement actions by the NGLRB.

In mid-2024, the Board conducted a large-scale operation in Kampala, targeting illegal slot machines and gaming equipment.

This exercise resulted in the confiscation of 198 illegal slot machines and 12 boxes of gaming machine spare parts.

The NGLRB has consistently emphasized that these operations are vital for eliminating unregulated gambling, which poses risks to both consumers and the broader gaming sector.

The Call for Compliance

As part of its mission to regulate the gaming industry, the NGLRB has repeatedly warned operators to adhere to the licensing requirements.

In a statement, the Board advised, “We strongly urge all operators to desist from running gaming activities without obtaining the necessary licenses from the Board.”

The Board also reminded operators that unlicensed gaming not only undermines the integrity of the industry but also exposes operators to severe penalties, including fines, equipment confiscation, and legal prosecution.

A Commitment to Fair Gaming in Uganda

The NGLRB remains committed to enforcing regulations and ensuring that the gaming sector operates within the law.

These efforts aim to protect consumers, promote transparency, and ensure that the industry contributes to Uganda’s economy in a regulated and fair manner.

With enforcement operations expected to continue across the country, the Board has sent a clear message to illegal operators: non-compliance will not be tolerated.
