Ugandan singer and actress Evelyn Lagu has succumbed to kidney complications, Ug Mirror reports.
Lagu, 41 died yesterday night.
Lagu has been battling kidney disease for over three years and has been undergoing dialysis treatment twice a week.
Who Was Evelyn Lagu
Evelyn Nakabira Lagu was a singer and actress from Uganda. Evelyn Lagu was thought to be one of the best local singers and actors.
She has sung backup vocals for (the late) Carol Nakimera, Halima Namakula, Ragga Dee, Makoma, and Mampi from Zambia. She has also played with the Mustard and Flash bands.
Early Life and School
Evelyn Nakabira was born on June 1, 1982, in what was then called the Masaka District, but is now called the Kalungu District. Her parents died when she was young, so she never got to know her dad.
Evelyn Lagu moved to Mityana to live with her aunt, who was a midwife, and her husband after her parents died.
The late Evelyn Lagu went to Aga Khan, Mityana SS, and Pride SS Mityana for her O’ Level education, and then to St. Peter’s Busubizi for her A’ Level education, which she finished in 1999.
Evelyn Nakabira Lagu suffered with kidney problems.
In the middle of 2020, she gave her life to God and started making gospel music as a way to thank the Almighty God for saving her life.
Her first gospel song was called “Testimony.”
This happened after she left Nakasero Hospital, where she had been staying. Evelyn Lagu was glad that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni paid for her medical care.
Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, who runs events, pushed the President to pay for Evelyn Lagu’s medical bills.
Barugahare said on his social media accounts that President Museveni told Lt. Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso at the State House to send the singer right away to Nakasero Hospital, where she got specialized medical care.
Family and Getting Along
Evelyn Lagu is the mother of one child, Marvin Mulumba. Marvin scored a division one on the 2019 O’ Level exams, which made his mother very proud.
She was once married to Tony Lagu, a South Sudanese tycoon who lived in Juba.
She took his name, Lagu, because it’s common for wives to take their husband’s name after they are legally married, even though Evelyn and Lagu were not legally married.
After a while, they broke up. It was said that Evelyn Lagu’s cheating caused them to split up.
