A police officer attached to Kawempe Police Station in the Kampala Metropolitan Policing area has been knocked dead bringing to four, the number of police officers lost under similar circumstances since the beginning of the year.

Police Constable Anthony Arinaitwe was knocked last night at the Bwaise-Busega stage along the Kampala-Northern Bypass.

Traffic Police Spokesperson Faridah Nampiima says that Arinaitwe was riding with his colleague Dickson Tumukunde on police motorcycle UP 7862 when a speeding taxi knocked them down at around 9:15 pm.

He died on the way to Mulago Hospital where he was being rushed for treatment while his colleague is still in critical condition.

Police are using Closed Circuit Television –CCTV cameras to trace the vehicle that knocked the two officers together with its driver.

“…the officers were on motorised patrol on that stretch when a speeding taxi knocked them down. With the help of the CCTV cameras, we are trying to establish the motor vehicle that knocked the officers and bring the driver to book,” ASP Nampiima said.

A similar accident happened a week ago when two other police officers were run over by a Fuso truck in Bwaise killing one on spot.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said Constable Sam Bazibu died on the spot while his colleague Constable Brenda Nabifo was rushed to Mulago hospital with serious injuries.

However, the truck registration number UAM 809L that ended Bazibu’s life was intercepted in Nateete with the aid of CCTV cameras to trace its movement. The driver was also arrested.

Eight months ago, Constable Simon Chemonges, was knocked dead near Uganda Management Institute –UMI by a driver who was allegedly attending a Zoom meeting while driving on the road.

The incident occurred on March 23 at around 4 pm when Chemonges was on a Bodaboda returning from duty.

Three weeks before Chemonges was knocked dead, Constable Doreen Tumusiime, from the police’s Directorate of Engineering and Logistics, was knocked at Ntinda Stretcher, Nakawa division, in Kampala.

Constable Tumusiime was killed by a Kenyan driver of a Mercedes Benz truck KBS 832/ZB 9924. The victim was riding a police motorcycle UP3990.
