Six police constables in Kampala are in trouble after being caught on the security cameras receiving what seemed to be a bribe.  The six policemen from Kawempe police Division are in the custody of the police professional standards unit.

The suspects are Police constables Eric Bonny, a driver, Abed Kwen, Kelvin Bwire, Ivan Kirya, Special police constable, Abraham Enatu, and Corporal David Mugume, who was in charge of the patrol for absconding from duty the night when the incident occurred over the weekend.

The officers were caught on security cameras around 1:00 am near Riham offices in Kiiza zone along Bombo-Kawempe Road while on a patrol vehicle receiving what seemed to be a bribe from a civilian.

“They seemed as if they were inspecting several cars that had parked sideways on the road. So their inspection went on to other engagements, where one of the drivers was seen taking out something from the car and handing it over to the officers on the camera,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, said about the arrest of the police officers.

He explains that a team of officers manning the National CCTV command center at Naguru police headquarters immediately informed that the Professional Standards Unit and Kawempe district police commander.

Enanga says that they are hunting for the drivers of six vehicles that were around that place late for questioning.

According to Enanga, upon arrest, the officers from the professional standards unit searched the suspects and found them with an unspecified amount of money.

“We continue to remind our officers to exhibit high standards of professionalism while on the roads and caution the public to avoid this business of pleading with the officers to discontinue the due processes of the law,” Enanga stated.
