FDC Calls For Emergency Meeting Over Police Brutality

1 Mins read

The leadership of the opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change has today called for an emergency meeting over the brutal arrest of their presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat.

Amuriat has been engaged in cat-and-mouse chase with police since last week when they started looking for votes ahead of 2021 general election.

Amuriat was Tuesday arrested by police in Kitgum District in Northern Uganda for allegedly defying police orders.

Police wanted Amuriat to go and hold his campaigns in Lamwo because President Yoweri Museveni who is also the NRM presidential candidate for the January 14, 2021 election was holding his campaign meetings at Boma grounds in Kitgum town.

As a result, police fired teargas to disperse his supporters before detaining Amuriat. He was released hours later.

On Wednesday, Amuriat was again arrested by police in Gulu City before his planned rally as he drums up support ahead of 2021 presidential election.

Police accused him of violating Electoral Commission guidelines by having a mass gathering that exceed 200 people.

Amuriat was however, released from Gulu Police Station.

Amuriat was released without recording a statement after the leader of opposition Betty Aol Acan stood surety for him.

Aswa Regional Police Commander Ezekiel Emitu confirmed Amuriat had been released on bail.

“He declined to record a statement but we have released him on bond,” Emitu confirmed.

Amuriat, who is today slated to be in Nwoya and Omuru districts awaits the communication from the headquarters in Najjanankumbi on what to do next.
