Over 10 Foreigners Arrested In National ID scam

1 Mins read

Police has apprehended thirteen people on suspicion of distributing National Identity cards to foreigners in the country.

According to the police spokesperson Fred Enanga 12 are foreign students while the other is a staff member of the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA).

Addressing the media on Monday in Kampala, Enanga noted that the suspects have been extorting money from other foreigners in exchange for the IDs.

NIRA spokesperson Gilbert Kadilo refused to comment on the allegations.

“These were arrested on intelligence at the end of last week and they are being processed by our officers, at least each of these ones was found in possession of Ugandan National Identity Card,” he said

He noted that these foreigners are being investigated.

“We are tracing backward on how they got the information from the Local Council 1 who filled out these forms, you are very much aware of the fact that if you are a Ugandan then it can either be by decent or by naturalization and so on,” he said.

He added that; “So the information has to be concrete and thorough but already we are getting challenges that these have been established to be foreigners and funny enough you find they are having these national IDs.”

He urged all the foreigners to follow the right procedures in acquiring citizenship

“We would like to inform all foreigners who are in this country that there are always correct procedures in place in acquiring Ugandan citizenship and national IDs, these procedures are well laid out at the directorate of citizenship and immigration,” he said.
