Police Disrupts Chameleon’s Electoral Campaign Launch With Tear Gas

1 Mins read

Police have on today dispersed crowds of city Lord Mayor aspirant Joseph Mayanja alias Jose Chameleon.

They had came to witness his launch for his new political role but were dispersed for failure to follow SOPs.

Chameleone was also expected to launch his own election campaign team but it was impossible with the tear gas that police sprayed to disperse the crowds.

“Our office launch has been interrupted as we planned to also launch my task force that will in hand walk with me to the coming Lord Mayor elections. Question is What is our crime?”Chameleon tweeted on his Twitter.

The supporters had gathered along Balintuma Rd in Mengo where Chameleon was to launch his offices.

Chameleon’s campaign director Henry Lubowa said police was asking them for proof of payment of inspection fees, wondering when this became a requirement to open up an office.

He has vowed to follow up the matter with the IGP, accusing police of frustrating peaceful participation in the ongoing electoral process

However, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident and said two suspects have been arrested and detained at Old Kampala Police Station on charges of disobedience of lawful orders.

Onyango said that they talked to organisers of the launch to put in place all the necessary SOPs of the Ministry of Health something they refused to adhere to.

“This was going to be a breeding ground for Covid-19. We talked to them again and they decided to leave the venue but later on they reorganised and came attacking police. We responded by firing teargas to disperse them,”he noted.
