Police in Kampala have recovered 40 motor vehicle batteries, including 20 allegedly stolen from a concrete mixer company in Nyanama, Wakiso District, and arrested a suspect as investigations into the theft continue.
The batteries were recovered on October 19, 2026, following investigations into the theft at Nyanama Mena Granite Limited, located in Nyanama Zone, Makindye-Sabagabo Municipality.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the incident was reported on October 7 by Ghebrengusi Ezra Bairu, an Eritrean national, who informed police that 10 company concrete mixer vehicles had been vandalised and 20 N150 batteries stolen.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the theft occurred at around 4:00am when unknown suspects allegedly accessed the company’s premises using ladders before targeting the vehicles.
Police investigations subsequently led to the impounding of motor vehicle registration number UAL 499E on October 18 and the arrest of a suspect identified as Mubiru Farouk.
During questioning, Mubiru reportedly told investigators that the stolen batteries had been hidden at his premises in Nakawa Market, Nakawa Division.
Acting on the information, a team of police officers from Katwe proceeded to the premises on October 19, where they recovered 40 motor vehicle batteries.
Police confirmed that the recovered items included the 20 N150 batteries allegedly stolen from Nyanama Mena Granite Limited, although the ownership and circumstances surrounding the other 20 batteries were not detailed in the police statement.
The recovery marks a breakthrough in the investigation, which began after the company reported the destruction of its vehicles and the disappearance of the batteries.
Mubiru remains in police custody as investigations continue, with detectives pursuing other suspects believed to have participated in the theft.
Police said efforts were underway to apprehend the suspects still at large and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement issued by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, companies and members of the public were urged to strengthen security at their premises and promptly report suspicious activities to police.
The case highlights the security risks facing businesses that operate fleets of vehicles and store valuable equipment on their premises, with police continuing efforts to recover stolen property and bring those responsible to justice.
