Police have arrested 82 suspects in an intelligence-led operation targeting theft from motorists, housebreaking, burglary and other criminal activities in several parts of Kampala.

The operation, conducted on September 14, 2026, covered Mabitto in Nateete Central B, Nanfuka Zone, Kigwannya and Busega in Rubaga Division.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the operation targeted suspected criminals believed to be exploiting heavy traffic to rob travellers and motorists in Busega, Nateete and along the Northern Bypass.

Police also recovered several exhibits, including suspected opium sticks allegedly found at points of sale and suspected stolen mobile phones.

‘Kampala’ among suspects arrested

During the screening and verification of the suspects, Police identified a man named Juko Muhammad, commonly known as “Kampala,” whom authorities describe as a notorious offender allegedly involved in thefts from motor vehicles.

Police specifically linked him to the alleged theft of Toyota Harrier grilles, particularly during periods of heavy traffic when motorists are vulnerable to roadside and traffic-jam theft.

Kawala said the suspect’s alleged activities have been reported in several parts of the city, including Kawempe, Bwaise, Nateete, Jinja Road and Kibuye Roundabout.

The identification of the suspect followed a wider screening process conducted after the arrests, as Police sought to separate individuals suspected of serious offences from those against whom there was insufficient evidence.

68 remain in custody

Following the screening and verification exercise, 68 of the 82 suspects remained in Police custody pending further investigations and subsequent court proceedings.

Police said preliminary information indicates that some of those detained are repeat offenders who had previously served custodial sentences for similar offences before allegedly returning to the community and becoming involved in criminal activities again.

The latest operation comes amid heightened Police efforts to disrupt criminal networks operating in Kampala, particularly those taking advantage of traffic congestion, crowded neighbourhoods and vulnerable residential areas.

Police said the intelligence-led approach is intended to identify specific individuals and locations linked to criminal activity rather than relying solely on routine patrols.

Kawala said Police would continue conducting targeted operations against individuals suspected of involvement in theft, burglary, drug-related offences and other forms of criminality.

The suspects are expected to undergo further investigations, with those against whom sufficient evidence is established subsequently being taken through the courts.

Police have also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, particularly during traffic jams, and to report suspected criminal activity to security authorities.
