Shock and grief have engulfed the health fraternity in eastern Uganda following the sudden death of Dr. Simon Ichumar Omeke, the District Health Officer (DHO) of Katakwi, who perished in a nasty road accident along the Soroti–Moroto road on Wednesday evening.
According to initial reports, the fatal crash occurred earlier in the evening, although details surrounding the cause of the accident, the vehicle involved, and whether there were other casualties remained unclear by press time. Security and emergency responders were reportedly dispatched to the scene.
Dr Omeke’s death leaves a significant gap in Katakwi’s health leadership, where he has been at the forefront of public health management and service delivery in the district.

A seasoned public health leader
Dr Omeke was a qualified medical doctor and public health specialist, registered with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council since 2004.
He held a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University and later obtained a Master of Public Health from the University of Western Australia.
Over the years, he built a reputation as a committed health administrator, overseeing disease prevention campaigns, medical outreach programmes, and enforcement of public health standards across Katakwi District.
He played a key role in coordinating large-scale medical camps that served thousands of residents, offering services ranging from cancer screening to immunisation and general treatment.
Dr Omeke was also vocal on public health risks, frequently warning communities against unqualified medical practitioners and spearheading crackdowns on quack doctors operating in the district.
During disease outbreaks such as monkeypox, he coordinated district response teams to ensure schools and communities adhered to safety protocols, demonstrating firm leadership in times of public health threats.
Nation mourns
Colleagues and local leaders described him as a dedicated and outspoken health officer who consistently championed improved healthcare access in rural communities.
His sudden death is expected to disrupt ongoing health programmes in Katakwi, particularly at a time when the district, like many others, continues to grapple with disease outbreaks and healthcare access challenges.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the accident as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
Further details will be provided as they become available.
