Uganda has intensified efforts to penetrate the Chinese market after showcasing its premium agricultural products at the HOTELEX Shanghai 2026, one of Asia’s leading hospitality and foodservice exhibitions.
The Uganda Embassy in Beijing led the country’s participation at the four-day event, held from March 30 to April 2 in Shanghai, with a national exhibition booth themed “From the Source of the Nile to the Streets of Shanghai.”
The showcase highlighted Uganda’s high-quality coffee, tea, and specialty dairy products, positioning the country as an emerging supplier to China’s fast-growing hospitality and retail sectors.
The initiative was designed to foster direct business linkages between Ugandan exporters and major Chinese buyers, including hotel chains, distributors, hospitality groups, and e-commerce platforms.
Officials said the engagement comes at a strategic time, ahead of the anticipated zero-tariff policy set to take effect in May 2026, which is expected to boost the competitiveness of Ugandan agricultural exports in the Chinese market.
Visitors to the Uganda pavilion were treated to an immersive experience of the country’s agricultural heritage, including live coffee cupping sessions, business-to-business meetings, and cultural performances aimed at promoting Uganda’s identity and export potential.
Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Oliver Wonekha, said the country’s participation reflects its commitment to strengthening trade relations and expanding market access for its agricultural products.
“This platform allows Uganda to build meaningful partnerships while showcasing the quality and uniqueness of our products to a global audience,” she noted.
Uganda is widely recognized for its premium agricultural commodities, particularly coffee and tea, which benefit from the country’s fertile soils and favorable climate. Officials say these natural advantages contribute to distinctive flavors that are increasingly sought after in international markets.
The showcase at HOTELEX Shanghai underscores Uganda’s broader ambition to position itself as a leading exporter of high-quality, sustainably produced agricultural goods, while deepening economic cooperation with China.
