Museveni Urges Kyankwanzi Residents to Focus on Wealth Creation, Jobs

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged residents of Kyankwanzi District to prioritise wealth creation and employment, saying the long period of peace under the National Resistance Movement has provided a firm base for economic transformation.

Speaking at an NRM campaign rally in Kyankwanzi on Tuesday, Museveni said the party’s greatest achievement was restoring peace after years of conflict that ravaged parts of Luweero and central Uganda in the 1970s and 1980s. He noted that Uganda has now enjoyed about four decades without war, allowing an entire generation to grow up in relative stability.

The President attributed the peace to the abandonment of sectarian politics based on religion, ethnicity and gender, which he said made it possible to build strong national institutions such as the army, police and prisons.

On development, Museveni pointed to significant investments in infrastructure, particularly roads and electricity. He said road networks that previously ended at Busunju and Mityana now extend through Mubende to Fort Portal and reach the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. He added that only three of Kyankwanzi’s 21 sub-counties are yet to be connected to the national power grid.

Museveni said access to clean water has improved, with most villages now served, but stressed the need to expand irrigation to strengthen agricultural production. He cited his banana plantation in Bushenyi as an example of how irrigation can dramatically increase yields, while warning against encroachment on wetlands.

He emphasised that infrastructure development must be matched by deliberate efforts to build wealth at the household level. Museveni encouraged smallholder farmers to adopt the four-acre model—combining food crops, cash crops, livestock, poultry and piggery—and urged large landowners to invest in commercial farming.

The President said growing household incomes drive national economic growth and job creation, noting that most employment comes from commercial agriculture, industrialisation, artisan trades, services and information and communication technology.

NRM Vice Chairman Al-Haji Moses Kigongo thanked supporters for turning up despite the rain and called for peaceful and disciplined mobilisation ahead of the elections. NRM Vice Chairperson for the Central Region Haruna Kasolo praised residents for resisting land grabbing and commended party mobilisers for door-to-door campaigns.

Museveni concluded by calling on residents to actively engage in wealth creation, saying it is the most sustainable way to generate jobs and improve livelihoods.
