Gen. Katumba Wamala Begins West Nile Road Infrastructure Inspection Tour

The Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, has today commenced a working tour of road infrastructure projects in the West Nile region. The tour is aimed at monitoring the progress of ongoing works, assessing road conditions, and ensuring that government investments in transport infrastructure are delivering the intended impact.

Over the years, the Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, has undertaken extensive road and bridge projects across West Nile to improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and uplift the livelihoods of communities, in line with Uganda’s Vision 2040. These interventions have been implemented through a mix of funding sources, including direct Government of Uganda financing and support from development partners such as JICA, the World Bank, the European Union, BADEA, and the African Development Bank.

In the last three years alone, recently completed and ongoing projects in the region amount to investments exceeding UGX 1.5 trillion, while upcoming projects are estimated to cost over UGX 1 trillion. Several strategic projects have already been completed, others are currently under implementation, and additional ones are at design and procurement stages, underscoring government’s continued commitment to improving connectivity within the region.

Key completed infrastructure projects in West Nile include the rehabilitation of Karuma Bridge; the upgrading of the Olwiyo–Gulu road (70.3km) together with Gulu City and Anaka Town roads (10.79km); and the Atiak–Laropi road (66km). A number of critical bridges have also been completed, among them Odroo Bridge on the Arua–Biliafe–Otrevu road in Terego, Wariki Bridge on the Logiri–Bondo road in Madi-Okollo, and Aji Bridge on the Offaka–Ullepi road, also in Madi-Okollo.

Other completed bridge works include Enyau Bridge on the Owafa–Kubala–Omugo road in Terego; Ora 1 and Ora 2 bridges, Awa Bridge, and Olemika Bridge along the Pakwach–Inde–Ocoko road; Jure Bridge on the Atiak–Adjumani–Moyo–Yumbe–Manibe road; and Amou Bridge on the Laropi–Palorinya–Obongi road. Additional completed bridges include Alla Bridge on the Eruba–Loiri road, Gazi Bridge on the Inde–Ogoko–Rhino Camp road, and Aca Bridge in Rhino Camp on the same corridor.

Through this working tour, the Minister and his team are reaffirming government’s commitment to strengthening transport infrastructure in West Nile, a critical enabler for regional integration, trade, and socio-economic development.
