In a twist worthy of a political blockbuster, Hajji Bruhan Sserunga, father to outspoken presidential candidate Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party (CMP) stunned crowds when he openly endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni right before the Head of State took the podium.
Before thousands of NRM supporters, Sserunga took the microphone and delivered a message that sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political circles:
“Please, vote overwhelmingly for President Museveni so he can complete the development journey he started in 1986,” he said to roaring applause.
The endorsement left many whispering, some cheering, and others scrambling to understand how a father publicly undercut his own son’s presidential bid, just weeks to the polls.
A Father’s Praise For “Peace And Stability”
Sserunga went on to hail President Museveni for ushering in peace and security, drawing a sharp contrast with Uganda’s turbulent past.
He emphasized that the stability brought by the NRM government had allowed ordinary Ugandans to work, educate their children, and build meaningful lives a message that echoed perfectly with the ruling party’s campaign line.
NRM Supporters Erupt In Celebration
The crowd in Kitagwenda erupted as Sserunga spoke, many seeing his endorsement as validation of President Museveni’s long leadership and continued relevance among elders.
NRM loyalists described the moment as “symbolic,” suggesting that even families with opposition figures can recognise the President’s legacy of peace, stability, and development.
With election day drawing closer, Munyagwa’s camp has remained silent. Perhaps regrouping, perhaps shocked, or perhaps preparing a fiery comeback in true Munyagwa style.
But for now, one thing is clear: In Kitagwenda, Museveni didn’t just win applause, he won the endorsement of the father of a man trying to unseat him.
A political plot twist Uganda will be talking about for days.
