Kaweweta, Nakaseke District — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has presided over the commissioning of 498 Officer Cadets of Intake 19/25 (Long) at the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Basic Military Training School, Kaweweta.
In his address, President Museveni commended the newly commissioned officers for successfully completing their training and joining what he described as an army built on the enduring values of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, discipline, professionalism, and resilience.
“I commend the Chief of Defence Forces and the leadership of the UPDF for maintaining this tradition of excellence,” President Museveni stated, underscoring the continued commitment of the national army to producing competent and ideologically grounded officers.
The Head of State further noted that the 177-kilometre Salim Saleh Trek undertaken by the cadets served as an important exercise in endurance, unity, and reflection on Uganda’s liberation journey. He emphasized that such traditions are essential in preserving the historical spirit and ethos upon which the UPDF was founded.
President Museveni also expressed satisfaction with the participation of officer cadets from Tanzania, Somalia, Mali, and the Central African Republic, describing their inclusion as a testament to Africa’s growing capacity to foster its own security and stability.
“This cooperation with our African brothers is proof that Africa can manage her own affairs,” he remarked, reaffirming Uganda’s longstanding commitment to Pan-African solidarity and regional collaboration.
The commissioning ceremony represents a significant milestone in the UPDF’s continued efforts to professionalize its ranks and enhance continental military cooperation in pursuit of peace and development across Africa.
