The Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jinja, passed away yesterday afternoon, leaving the faithful and clergy across the country in deep mourning.
In an official statement released by the Diocese, Church authorities confirmed that Bishop Wamika died at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
“It is with deep sorrow and Christian hope in the resurrection that the Diocese of Jinja announces the passing on of our beloved shepherd, Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, Bishop of Jinja, who passed on today at 16:00 hours,” read the statement.
The Diocese noted that details regarding the funeral and burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. In the meantime, the Church has invited all the clergy, religious communities, and faithful to pray for the repose of Bishop Wamika’s soul.
Bishop Wamika, who has been at the helm of the Jinja Diocese since 2010, was known for his pastoral zeal, humility, and dedication to social transformation through education, youth empowerment, and interfaith cooperation. Under his leadership, the Diocese expanded its outreach programs and strengthened its commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities within the Busoga sub-region.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from within and beyond the Catholic community, with many describing Bishop Wamika as a spiritual father, teacher, and champion of peace.
The Uganda Episcopal Conference is expected to issue a formal condolence message, while preparations are underway for memorial prayers at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Jinja, the seat of the Diocese.
Bishop Wamika’s passing marks a profound loss not only for the Catholic Church but for the entire Busoga region, where his leadership and compassion left a lasting impact.
