Not even the heavens could hold back Uganda’s love for Afrigo Band as thousands of fans braved a heavy downpour to celebrate the legendary group’s golden jubilee at a sold-out Stanbic Bank-sponsored concert in Lugogo.
The historic night brought together music lovers across generations, proving why Afrigo remains Uganda’s most celebrated and enduring band. Dressed in elegant black-and-gold outfits, band veterans Moses Matovu, Rachel Magoola, and Joanita Kawalya led the audience on a nostalgic journey with timeless hits such as Batuuse, Jim, Teri Mubi, Emaali, Obangaina, and Olumbe Lw’Obwavu.
The concert’s energy soared when Congolese superstar Kofi Olomide stormed the stage with his electrifying Ndombolo dance moves and delivered chart-topping hits like Papa Mobimba, Effrakata, and Senga, sending revelers into a frenzy.
Stanbic Bank’s Brand and Marketing Manager, Lois Kwikiriza, praised the fans’ resilience:
“The rains were a blessing in disguise. They tested our love for Afrigo and Ugandan music, and we passed with distinction. Ugandans truly celebrated their very own.”
The celebrations were crowned with a breathtaking fireworks display and the launch of the Afrigo at 50 Commemorative Book, presided over by Prince David Wassajja on behalf of the Kabaka of Buganda, alongside Uganda Communications Commission’s Hon. Nyombi Thembo. Delivering the Kabaka’s message, Prince Wassajja hailed Afrigo for its immense contribution to Uganda’s music and cultural heritage.
Event host Douglas Lwanga and an energetic opening set from Abeka Band kept the crowd warmed up, while discounted drinks courtesy of Flexipay and Uganda Breweries kept spirits high.
Talent Africa CEO Ali Allybai described the show as more than just a concert, calling it “a historic celebration of resilience, culture, and timeless music.”
Afrigo’s 50th anniversary has cemented their place as a living symbol of Uganda’s musical soul, proving that even the rain cannot wash away five decades of rhythm, passion, and loyalty.
