Nandala Mafabi Declares 2026 Presidential Bid, Tells Museveni to “Pack Up and Go”

1 Mins read

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Secretary General Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2026 general elections, sending a direct and confrontational message to President Yoweri Museveni.

Speaking during a live interview on Elgon FM in Mbale on Thursday, Mafabi, the long-serving MP for Budadiri West, stated bluntly: “Time is up. I’m coming to remove M7,” adding that Uganda deserves new leadership after nearly four decades of President Museveni’s rule.

“Museveni should pack up his bags and head to his village in Rwakitura,” Mafabi said during the broadcast. “This country needs fresh ideas, accountability, and leadership that serves the people—not one man’s legacy.”

Mafabi’s announcement sets the stage for what could be one of the most closely watched presidential campaigns in recent memory. A trained accountant and successful businessman, Mafabi has built a reputation as a fiscal hawk and political heavyweight within the opposition since joining FDC in the early 2000s.

His stronghold in the Bugisu sub-region and long-standing influence in Parliament position him as a formidable contender in a race that is already attracting growing national interest.

President Museveni, 79, has not publicly confirmed whether he will seek re-election but has given no indication of stepping down. Having ruled Uganda since 1986, Museveni remains one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, and his continued hold on power has drawn criticism from both local and international observers.

Political analysts suggest that Mafabi’s direct challenge could energize opposition supporters, particularly amid ongoing frustrations over governance, youth unemployment, corruption, and political repression.

FDC has not officially endorsed a presidential candidate, but Mafabi’s declaration may force the party to consolidate its internal processes ahead of the 2026 elections. It remains unclear how his bid will align with other opposition efforts, including potential coalitions.

As the political temperature rises, the Electoral Commission is expected to issue formal guidelines and timelines later this year, setting the pace for Uganda’s next major electoral showdown.
