The Ministry of Works and Transport has suspended operations of Y.Y General Construction Ltd, commonly known as Y.Y Coaches, for 15 days following two separate road crashes that left three people dead and several others injured.

The announcement was made in a letter dated May 12, 2025, and signed by the Minister of State for Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, addressed to the Managing Director of Y.Y Coaches. The suspension takes effect from 7:00pm on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, and covers all routes operated by the company.

The Ministry’s action follows a fatal crash that occurred on May 5, 2025, involving a Y.Y bus with registration number UAV 701C. The accident, which happened at Najja village in Buikwe District along the Kampala–Katosi–Jinja Highway, claimed the lives of three passengers. “Preliminary findings by the Uganda Police indicate that the driver of the bus was at fault. The said driver is still on the run,” the Minister stated.

A second accident, also under investigation, involved a Y.Y bus with registration number UAX 852F which was traveling from Kampala to Yumbe. The vehicle crashed at Ayango on the Pakwach–Arua Highway. “Preliminary findings from Uganda Police Force show that the driver was attempting to overtake a vehicle and lost control of the bus,” Hon. Byamukama added.

He described the two incidents as signs of “recklessness by your drivers on the road and failure to control the conduct of your drivers, among other managerial concerns.”

During the suspension, Y.Y Coaches is required to avail all its buses for re-inspection by a joint team from the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Uganda Police Force. The company must also present the two drivers involved in the crashes to the Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety for appropriate action.

The company is further directed to provide a complete list of its drivers, including appointment letters and copies of driver badges, for verification by the Ministry. Additionally, it must submit a schedule of refresher training undertaken by drivers within the past year.

Hon. Byamukama also instructed the company to issue a public statement detailing what happened and what steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Ministry said the suspension is intended to facilitate thorough investigations into the crashes and to promote safer transport services.
