Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao has formally declared his bid for a fourth term as party leader, as the DP concluded its nationwide nomination exercise ahead of a key delegates’ conference later this month.
Mao, who has led Uganda’s oldest political party for 15 years, submitted his nomination forms at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday. In a defiant address, he criticized internal opponents, accusing them of hypocrisy.
“Some of those accusing me of selling the party are the same ones now rushing to pick nomination forms. You cannot undermine the party and then want to lead it,” Mao said.
More than 100 members from across the country have expressed interest in various leadership positions, signaling renewed engagement as the DP seeks to rebuild after years of internal strife and high-profile defections, particularly ahead of the 2021 general elections.
Among the new entrants is Alitia Elia from West Nile, who is contesting for Vice President for Northern Uganda. He voiced optimism about the party’s revival.
“The DP has a strong legacy, and I believe with committed leadership, we can reclaim our position in Uganda’s politics,” Alitia said.
The upcoming national delegates’ conference is expected to chart the future of the party and elect leaders to guide it through a critical phase of transition and reorganization.
