Mayiga Calls for Protection of Press Freedom in Uganda

The Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called for greater protection and respect for press freedom in Uganda, emphasizing the media’s critical role in strengthening democracy and development.

In a statement released on World Press Freedom Day, Mayiga hailed journalists and media professionals for their tireless dedication to truth and public service.

“A free and responsible press is the cornerstone of any democratic society. Let us protect it, support it, and allow it to thrive,” Mayiga said.

He expressed appreciation for the efforts of journalists who work with “dedication, passion and love,” and urged Ugandan authorities, particularly the security forces, to uphold the rights of the media.

“I urge security forces in Uganda to respect the rights of members of the press because acts of violence against journalists will impair freedom and hinder development,” he added.

The Katikkiro’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns over attacks, harassment, and intimidation of journalists in Uganda, especially during political events and demonstrations.
